Loyal Friends

God spared my life for a reason. And that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness. We will fulfil that mission together.

— States president-elect Donald Trump after his reelection

MAYPAJO, Caloocan City — In fulfilling her husband’s promise to Pasayeños, First Lady Marie Louise Araneta-Marcos briefly visited Pasay City to lend support to the ‘Lab for All’ advocacy of Mayor Imelda ‘Emi’ Calixto-Rubiano that entails genuine public service through the promotion of health, education, livelihood and peace and order, or HELP.

In her short message, she narrated that as she was about to leave for Pasay, she was reminded by her husband, President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., about his promise of support in uplifting the lives of Pasayeños through meaningful projects that would help them get a better life and future in unison with his initiative for a ‘Bagong Pilipinas’.

The First Lady vowed to be always available to assist in Pasay City’s march towards progress and development that would earn for the city a new appellation as Metro Manila’s ‘Scene City’ which every resident can be proud of and where visitors can experience the fantastic scenes one will see in visiting the city.

THIS must be a joke but apparently, Davao del Norte District I representative Pantaleon Alvarez got inspired with Donald Trump’s reelection as United States president so he is pushing his friend, former president Rodrigo ‘Rody’ Duterte, to run again and be reelected as president of the Republic in 2028.

“Let him run. Let the people decide and if there is a legal issue, let the courts resolve it,” Alvarez had stated in a public statement.

However, an important provision in the 1987 Constitution limits presidents to a ‘one fixed six-year term without reelection’—an offshoot of the dictatorship of the late president Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr., who perpetuated himself in power for 20 years until his ouster in 1986.

“The President shall not be eligible for any reelection,” the Constitution states.

Still, the good congressman from Davao del Norte, who apparently is beholden to the ex-president for backing him as House Speaker in mid-2016, believes the prohibition refers only to consecutive presidential terms.

“It refers to the sitting or incumbent president not allowed for reelection,” Alvarez enthused.

When asked about Duterte’s age and health, he retorted that “As you can see, lawmakers grilled the ex-president for 13 long hours, but he still ended up strong. His heart is in the right place,” in reference to the House Quad Committee’s investigation on the previous administration’s drug war and the extrajudicial killings (EJKs) that went with it.

Duterte’s possible reelection was likewise raised because in 2010, this was also brought forth before the Supreme Court when former president Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada, following a presidential pardon for his September 2007 conviction for plunder, joined the May 2010 presidential race, wherein he finished second to then senator Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III.

But it must be recalled that the high tribunal left this question hanging as it ruled that the issue was rendered moot with Aquino’s victory.

“Look at our senators. They can always run after their consecutive terms. The people are allowed to decide whether they want the senator to be reelected. In the US, look at President Trump; he was reelected. If we really believe in democracy, then let the people decide,” Alvarez enthused.

Goddam Son-of-a-gun . . . this is baloney!
