President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday (April 10) assailed the ‘gentleman’s agreement” that former President Rodrigo Duterte allegedly entered with China over the territorial waters of the Philippines.
“I am horrified by the idea that we have compromised - through a secret agreement - the territory, the sovereignty, and the sovereign rights of the Filipinos“ Marcos stated during a media ambush interview in San Juan.
Opposition Rep. Edcel Lagman of Albay said Marcos’ reaction was understandable, saying that he agrees with the chief executive.
“There can be no ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with a chronic aggressor like China in the West Philippine Sea,” said Lagman in a statement.
The lawmaker added: “I agree with President Marcos Jr. that former President Duterte’s unilateral and surreptitious agreement with China’s principal official is a grave mistake and indeed compromises Philippine sovereignty.”
He stressed that the supposed agreement has “no binding effect.”
Marcos has not idea what the alleged agreement between Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping contained.
“We dcon’t know if it’s a secret agreement. We don’t know anything about it,” he said.
Marcos noted that the alleged agreement had neither “documentation” nor record.
He stressed that he was never briefed about it when he took over the presidency.
“No one even told us that there was such an agreement,” the president stressed.
The supposed agreement was reportedly reached between Duterte and Xi, apparently during a visit to China by the former Philippine president.
Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque publicly revealed about the agreement just recently.
Marcos said his government has been talking with former officials of the government to know more about the agreement.
“We’re talking to his (Duterte) former officials Maybe not the president himself but all his former officials, we are asking them what that (agreement” is,” said Marcos.
He admitted, however, that former Duterte officials have not been forthright about their answers.
“We’re trying to clear it up to now because from the former administration, iba-iba ang sagot eh,” the president said.
He said he will ask Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian to clear the air about the supposed agreement.
