PNP chief files charges against ex-general for destabilization fake news

1/8/24, 11:40 AM

Philippine National Police Chief General Benjamin Acorda revealed Monday (January 8) that he has filed charges against a retired Army general for claiming in a vlog that the police commander has withdrawn support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Declaring the alleged act as ‘unforgivable”, Acorda complained that retired Brig. Gen. Johnny Lacsamana Macanas claimed over Youtube Channel that “AFP PNP Generals” have been allegedly convincing Marcos to resign.

With the images of Acorda and AFP chief General Romeo Brawner posted in the vlog, there was an apparent attempt to mislead the public, the PNP official said.

The vlogger described the alleged event as “Good News!” despite declarations by both Acorda and Brawner that the information was glaringly “fake news”.

In Macanas’ vlog entitled “The General”s Opinion”, the images of Brawner, Acorda and Marcos were posted.

The PNP said Macanas first posted the vlog on December 29, 2023.

During the PNP press briefing, the police agency presented the thumbnail of the alleged vlog.

“It hurts me that there are people na gusto lang maging sikat yung kanilang vlog ay gagawa ng mga disinformation,” Acorda told his men during Monday’s flag ceremony.

He noted: “No less than my face, the face of the Chief of Staff, posted and viral saying the AFP and the PNP withdrawing support or asking for the resignation of the president is unforgivable.”

Earlier, Brawner stated that the AFP will remain loyal to the Constitution and will continue to discharge of their duty.

The AFP chief stressed that Macanas’ claim has no basis. However, he has yet to take steps to legally hold the former general liable for his actions.
