Vast majority of Filipinos reject Charter change - Pulse Asia survey

3/27/24, 9:14 AM

A large majority of Filipinos are convinced that there is no need to amend the 1987 Constitution at this time.

Survey firm Pulse Asia, which is one of two most reliable polling companies in the country, said this is indicated in the results of surveys conducted from March 6 to 10.

While the survey results indicated that 72 percent of respondents are aware of the ongoing bid of government and congressmen to amend the Charter, at least 88 percent reject constitutional amendments now.

The heightened awareness level was mainly due to the current discussions of the issue at Congress, including the continued attacks being made by congressmen against members of the Senate.

Pulse Asia said the awareness level on the Charter change proposals has soared compared to the March 2023 survey results.

Despite the high public awareness level only eight percent of the respondents support the Lower House bid to amend the Charter now.

This pales in comparison to the 88 percent who insist that it is not yet time to touch the 37 year-old Constitution.

Only four percent of the respondents remain undecided on the issue.

Of the anti-amendment respondents, only14 percent are convinced taht amendment should be done but not now.

Opposition to Charter change is strong in Mindanao with 91 percent rejecting it. Balance Luzon respondents registered an 89 percent rejection while Visayas and Metro Manila respondents registered 85 and 81 percent.

Earlier, the pro-Charter change Lower House boasted the results of the alleged survey conducted by newcomer marketing research firm Tangere.

Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr. said the little known survey company disclosed that 52 percent of Filipinos support moves to amend the Charter.

The Tangere survey reportedly showed that only 23 percent of respondents disagree with any attempt to tinker with the Constitution, with only 10 percent of them “strongly” disagreeing to amend it.

It was noted however that Gonzales has failed to reveal other details of the survey, including the group or individual that commissioned the survey.
