Online fraud menace caused by deepfake technology may soon find a worthy adversary in the Philippines.

This was gathered after World, a global network focusing on people’s identity and finances, disclosed it will soon release in the country its “human verification device” in a bid to address the proliferation of deepfake technology that has victimized millions.

“The Orb” which is World’s device is expected to defend the public against online fraud and ensure that identities of internet conversations are verified.

In a press conference, Damien Kieran, World chief legal and privacy officer, revealed that they have already pilot tested the device in many areas in Bulacan and found them to be effective in combatting fraudulent transactions made in the internet.

Kieran said they plan to introduce The Orb in popular spots in Metro Manila that includes Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City and Greenhills Mall in San Juan.

“The goal is for everyone to be able to use this device and benefit from it,” Kieran said.

He explained that there is an urgent need for a human verification device due to the rising occurences of online fraud that include identity fraud linked to deepfake technology.

Deepfake technology occurs when a person’s likeness is manipulated or cloned.

Kieran stressed that The Orb is expected to significantly improve internet safety for all Filipinos as it helps individuals and businesses feel secure online.
