PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - At least 110 elderly Haitians were among the 180 people massacred by a gang whose leader blamed the death of his child to witchcraft.
The targeting of senior citizens for the slayings was apparently triggered by this suspicion.
In a statement, acting Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime condemned the massacre declaring that “a red line has been crossed.”
His office said the prime minister will “mobilize all forces to track down and annihilate” the gangs behind the killins.
Authorities identified Wharf Jeremie gang leader Monel “Mikano” Felix as the mastermind.
The National Human Rights Defence Network (RNDDH), a non-government organization in Haiti, disclosed on Sunday that 110 of the fatalities were persons over 60.
Together with 70 others, gang members targeted senior citizens in Cite Soleil over the weekend.
However, the death toll is believed to be higher as witnesses have disclosed that they saw “mutilated bodies” burned in the streets.
The young relatives of the elderly citizens who have been attacked were also killed for trying to protect the targeted victims.
The RNDDH accused Felix of ordering the mass killings after his child was afflicted with a “mysterious” disease and died on Saturday. A voodoo priest consulted by the gang leader blamed elderly people near his place in C ite Soleil as the ones who inflicted witchcraft spells on the child.
Cite Soleil is a thickly populated slum area near the p;ort of the capital Port-au-Prince. It is among the poorest and the most prone to violence in the island
Armed gangs have been lording it over in their territories as they terrorize Haitians with extreme violence that included indiscriminate killings, gang rapes and kidnappings.
