A man shouting” I am Jesus Christ” attacked a group of monks in a Franciscan monastery in southeastern Spain, killing a 76-year-old religious brother.
The religious order disclosed that two other monks were injured when the still unidentified amok went on a rampage on Saturday (November 9) while the brothers were sharing breakfast.
The middle-aged suspect was armed with a blunt object when he attacked the monks at the Santo Espiritu del Monte monastery in Gilet, a village near Valencia.
The Franciscan order said in a press release that the attack stopped when Brother Angel Ramon succeeded in driving him away from their area.
A religious official said they are saddened by the passing of one of the victims of the attack, a 76-year-old brother.
Brother Ramon had told the reporters that the attacker may have gone mad when he assaulted the monks.
The Gilet town hall issued a statement disclosing that the suspect had been arrested while fleeing into the mountains near the monastery.
He had been identified as a 46-year-old Spaniard with a record of drug addiction and psychiatric disorder.
