An 80-year-old woman from Illinois, United States, was allegedly shot dead by her husband in their bed following an argument.

According to a report from KGNS TV, the victim was identified as Helen Witter, and the suspect as her husband, 81-year-old Charles Witter.

Charles was arrested by authorities and charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s death.

Authorities stated that Charles called 911 on January 17 at approximately 12:40 a.m., reporting that he had shot his wife.

When officers arrived, Charles met them at the front door and was immediately taken into custody.

Upon searching the home, officers discovered Helen unconscious in the couple’s bed.

She was found lying on her back with her head resting on a pillow and her mouth open, with blood on the pillow and bedding.

Helen was transported to the hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.

Charles reportedly told police that the couple had been arguing while in bed when he retrieved a gun from the nightstand and allegedly shot his wife once.

“The alleged shooting death of Helen Witter is indeed a tragedy,” the state attorney said. “I extend my sincere condolences to the entire Witter family and their friends as they cope with this heartbreaking loss.”

The court granted a motion to detain Charles Witter ahead of his trial.

His next court appearance is scheduled for February 10. #
