DOHA, Qatar — After some of its members were stuck in the elevator of their hotel in Doha prior to their game against the host country, Gilas Pilipinas shocked the Qatar squad, 74-71, in the 2nd Doha International Cup.
Calvin Oftana captured the moment while he and several of his teammates were pulled out of an elevator shaft.
"Stuck in the elevator," Oftana said with a facepalm emoji.
But the predicament did not deter the Filipinos from trouncing the Qataris in a late rally in the fourth quarter of their scheduled match up.
After trailing 11 points, the nationals caught fire in the final period and roared back for the thrilling victory that saw their opponents buckle to their incessant scoring performance to edge by three in the end.
Guard Dwight Ramos, power forward Justin Brownlee and big man AJ Edu led the Filipinos’ comeback, scoring 15 and 10 points each respectively.
A Brownlee slam off an Edu assist gave Gilas the lead for good, 70-69, before two free throws by Scottie Thompson in the final 16 seconds proved to be the game’s marginal points as the pro-Filipino crowd at the University of Qatar went ecstatic.
The Qataris still had one final chance to send the game into overtime, but naturalized player Mike Lewis II missed a three-point attempt in the team's final play.
