A 69-year-old senior patient from Goa, India received the first-of-its-kind heart valve treatment in the region, marking a unique achievement in cardiac treatment.

The woman underwent Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a procedure that involves inserting a new valve non-surgically in a previously surgically replaced degenerated valve.

Such non-invasive procedure was conducted at Manipal Hospital Goa, a private hospital in India's smallest state, under the guidance of interventional cardiologist Dr. Nikhil Sontakke and other experts.

"The successful TAVR procedure represents a paradigm shift in the management of valvular heart disease, offering patients a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery," Dr. Sontakke said.

"This landmark achievement underscores our team's expertise and dedication to providing innovative solutions for our patients," he added.

Prior to the procedure, the patient had been facing recurrent heart failure symptoms due to degeneration of her replaced aortic valve.

She was discharged from the hospital within four days in a stable condition experiencing complete recovery from symptoms of heart failure.
