Bigo ang pamahalaan sa pagnanais na pabalikin sa Pilipinas si dating Negros Occidental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. matapos na tanggihan ng Timor Leste Court of Appeals ang extradition request ng gobyerno.

Ayon kay abogado Ferdinand Topacio, pinagbigyan ng korte ang apela ni Teves laban sa extradition sang-ayon sa direktibang inilabas nitong Huwebes (Marso 20).

“I congratulate my counterpart lawyers in Timor Leste - Lisensiados Duarte and Jose Pedro Sousa, Dr. Ximenes and others who formed the so-called Tanggol Teves Team - for their unwavering faith in the justness of our cause,” sinabi ni Topacio.

Hindi naman makapaniwala ang mga abogado sa Department o Justice sa pagkabigo ng kanilang petisyon.

Ipinagtataka ni DOJ spokersperson Asst. Secretary Mico Clavano ang kakaibang desisyon sapagkat dalawang beses nang napagbigyan ang extradition request ng Pilipinas sa mga nakaraang desisyon/

“This sudden shift raises serious concerns, and we are currently seeking further clarification regarding the basis of this decision,” ayon kay Clavano.

“We reiterate our firm request for cooperation in this matter. Mr. Teves is facing serious charges, including multiple counts of murder, and msut be brought home to face the full force of the law,” diin ng tagapagsalita ng DOJ.

Dagdag niya: “Allowing him to evade justice would be the height of injustice, not only to the victims and their families but to the integrity of the rule of law.”

Sangayon sa record, naglabas ang Timor Leste court ng extradition order noong Hunyo 27, 2024.

Umapela si Teves sa desisyon ngunit nanatili ang direktiba ng korte noong Disyembre 2024.

Dinakip si Teves noong Marso 2024 sa Dili, matapos na mag-isyu ng Red Notice ang International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

Si Teves ang pangunahing akusado sa pagpaslang kay Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo at marami pang iba noong Marso 2023.

Nakalabas ng bansa ang dating mambabatas at natunton sa Timor Leste kung saan patuloy siyang naglalagi.
