Drivers hit Grab for dodging responsibility in granting fare discounts to seniors, PWDs

A group of Grab drivers are demanding the refund of their expenses in granting 20 percent discounts on the cost of rides by senior citizens and persons with disability.
Led by Laban TNVS National Director Jun de Leon, the group said they have asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to look into their complaint which they presented to the agency as early as March this year.
De Leon said they have appealed to the LTFRB to put an end to the unfair deal they have been getting from the Grab management.
In an interview over TeleRadyo Serbisyo, De Leon disclosed that prior to March 2024, Grab drivers are asked to shoulder halt of the discounts granted to elderly and PWD passengers. The other 10 percent is covered by Grab.
However, since last March, the drivers are shouldering the whole cost of discounts.
Under the laws governing the senior citizens and PWD discounts, business entities are entitled to tax refunds commensurate to the cost of discounts they grant elderly citizens and PWDs.
De Leon said that aside from making the drivers shoulder the full cost of granting discounts, they also pay the Grab management 20 to 25 percent commission for each passenger they service.
He explained that a Grab driver is left with PHP550 income for every PHP1,000 fare they get.
This is because they have to grant senior citizens and PWDs a discount of PHP 200 representing 20 percent of the fare. Added to this deduction is the PHP250 that the Grab management gets as its commission.
“Isa pang kahilingan natin sa LTFRB, ilabas ang full accounting nito para naman tama ang maibayad sa mga drivers na nalamangan at nilamangan ng Grab,” said De Leon.
